Students in the Culinary Arts program at C-A BOCES' Belmont Career & Technical Center recently tested to receive the ServSafe® Food Safety Certification.  Seven of the 11 senior students passed the national exam and became certified.

ServSafe® is the restaurant industry’s leading and most recognized food safety program.  Its standards are established by the National Restaurant Association, through industry experts.  Students go through between 15 and 20 hours of rigorous training, both in the classroom and in the kitchen.  They then need to pass the 90-question exam with a score of 75 percent or better.  Those who pass the exam receive a certificate valid for five years before they have to retest.

The ServSafe® certification is a valuable asset for a student to take with them into a job interview.  It shows that they have the knowledge as well as a drive to succeed.  In addition, most culinary colleges will waive the basic sanitation course for those students who hold the ServSafe® certificate.  That saves the student time and a tuition savings in the range of $700 to $800.

Chef Joseph Fusco is a new teacher to the Belmont CTE Center.  Mr. Fusco brings 30 years of restaurant and business experience to the position as well as being a New York State-certified Culinary Arts teacher and ServSafe® Instructor/Proctor.
