Welding / Metal FabricationCourse Description:
Welding/Metal Fabrication is a two-year program to prepare students for entrylevel positions, apprenticeships, and college level training programs. Students learn and work in a professional environment to develop real world employee skills for success in future training and employment. Students who succeed in this program will have a broad base of skills related to the metalworking, manufacturing, and construction industries. Students will learn specific skills using the latest technology in welding and fabrication including SMAW, GMAW, FCAW, GTAW, OFC, PAC, as well as Shearing, Punching, Forming, Sawing, Grinding, and Drilling. Topics covered: Major topics of study will include safety, trade math, ELA skills pertaining to the trade, layout skills, welded joint design, blueprint reading, metal fabrication, metallurgy, testing and inspection of welds, oxy-fuel cutting, air carbon arc gouging, shielded metal arc welding, gas metal arc welding, flux-cored arc welding, gas tungsten arc welding, and American Welding Society Level 1 Certification. Offered At:
Belmont Career and Technical Education Center Ellicottville Career and Technical Education Center Olean Career and Technical Education Center Program Goal:
Our goal is to provide our students with the skills required to go on to post secondary institutions, apprentice training, or the entry level welding workforce. Projects and Experiences:
Students at our centers interact with students from all of our component schools. This interaction is a wonderful way to learn the important workplace skills needed to interact in a diverse workplace setting. Our students have the opportunity to compete in several events such as the SkillsUSA competitions held both regionally and statewide. The American Welding Society has also sponsored regional welding competitions along with various corporate sponsors. We tour several area colleges and industrial sites throughout the program. We incorporate “real world” projects into our programs to provide services for many community groups in the area. Some past projects include projects for Olean Parks Department, Rotary Club, Cattaraugus County Sherriff’s Department, as well as private individuals. Students are required to create a professional portfolio showcasing their knowledge and experiences Assessments:
Assessments in the Welding program are set forth by the American Welding Society’s (AWS) Schools Excelling through National Skill Standards Education (S.E.N.S.E.) Level I program. Portfolio review Certifications:
