Course Description: 

The Medical Professions Program is a two year program that prepares for a career in Health Occupations, placing an emphasis on those requiring an associate’s degree or obtaining professional certification.  Focal points of the program include the skills associated with Certified Nursing Assistant, Medical Assisting, Phlebotomy, EKG Technician, Medical Biller and Coder, and Pharmacy Technician.
 

Topics covered:

Year 1 - Health care of the past, present, and future, communication and interpersonal skills, infection control, safety and emergency procedures, anatomy and physiology, promoting patient independence, respecting residents’ rights, basic nursing skills, growth and development, recognizing abnormal changes in the body, reporting and recording, EKG application, CPR, First Aid, medical terminology.

Year 2 - Pharmacology, diagnostic procedures, medical specialties, financial management, medical assisting, phlebotomy, medical billing and coding.

Program Goal: 

The Medical Professions curriculum exposes students to an exciting variety of “in demand” health care careers. It provides theory, skills and real world experiences related to the role of the medical professional. This program will also provide the student with the confidence he/she will need to be successful in the health care field by enhancing their leadership, communication, and management skills.

Projects and Experiences: 

Expectations include: Complete all assignments, lectures, note taking, demonstrations and return demonstration of lab activities, classroom dissections, disease paper, career paper, portfolio, project, and clinical rotation. Clinical experiences will satisfy requirements for obtaining their NYS CNA certificate, as well as allowing the student the opportunity to connect classroom skills in the working industry. Clinical sites include local hospitals, office settings and long-term care facilities

Assessments: 

NYS Certified Nurse Assisting, CPR/First Aid, EKG, phlebotomy, skills checklists, classroom tests, quizzes, homework and projects.

National Occupational Competency Testing Institute (NOCTI) Exam.

May earn New York State Technical Endorsement on high school diploma
