Course Description: 

The Criminal Justice program prepares students for careers and further study in the field of Criminal Justice. The Criminal Justice System covers the fields of police, courts and corrections. Students will study law, both criminal and civil, including NYS Penal Law, Criminal Procedure Law, and Constitutional Law.

Topics Covered:

Law enforcement, from security work to community policing, physical and electronic security systems, crime prevention, public relations, use of force, firearm safety, investigation techniques, Criminal, Civil, Constitutional and NYS Penal Law, First Aid and CPR, procedural operations, tactics, crime scene operations, court systems, trial procedures, corrections systems with field trips, annual Cop Camp.

Program Goal: 

Preparing students for careers and further study in Criminal Justice.  Students will gain knowledge of many aspects of law and law enforcement through instruction and hands on activities.  Students will develop a strong foundation of knowledge as well as an understanding of the entire criminal justice system.  Upon completion students will be better prepared for continued studies in criminal justice, entry level security positions, or military service.

Projects and Experiences: 

Projects and experiences include plaster casting, DWI enforcement, felony and non-felony traffic stops, ticket writing, crime scene investigation, latent print detection, ink print processes, physical training, report writing which would include incident reports, arrest reports, accident reports, court processes including mock trials.  Students are required to create a professional portfolio showcasing their knowledge and experiences.

Assessments: 

Students will be assessed and successfully complete this program of study through the following:
 - Daily evaluation of performance of standards
 - Obtainment of a local or advanced Regents diploma
 - Completion of a professional portfolio which will include:  employment cover letter, application, resume, demonstration of work and successful completion of a mock job interview.
- Professional internship with police, corrections, parole, probation, security, or legal profession mentor.
- Successful evaluation through the National Occupational Competency Testing Institute (NOCTI) examinations which consist of a written and
multiple practical assessments.

NYS security Guard 8 hour Traning Certificate

First Aid and CPR

May earn New York State Technical Endorsement on high school diploma
