Course Description: 

This course will prepare students for careers and further study in the changing field of automotive technology through hands-on project based learning experiences.

Proper use of tools and shop safety

Reading reference materials and manuals

Detailing

Hydraulics

Oxy-acetylene operations and welding

NYS motor vehicle inspection

Introduction to gas engines

Batteries and charging systems

Scan tools

Lamps, accessories and wiring

Starting systems

Brake service

Antilock brakes

Heating and cooling

Ignition systems

Steering and suspension

Fuel, air induction, and exhaust systems

Business operation and management

Computerized engine controls

Program Goal: 

To prepare students for entry level automotive careers and further study in the automotive technology field. Options for further study include Automotive Technology/Mechanics, Motorsports, Parts and Service Technology, Motorcycle Technology, ATV and Diesel Mechanics.

Projects and Experiences: 

Students gain experience through hands-on laboratory work. Projects include oil changes, tires, brakes, exhaust systems, engine work, electrical repairs, and NYS inspections. Students have the opportunity to participate in SkillsUSA competitions as well as other competitions that are sponsored by car dealerships and car manufacturers. Some of these competitions may result in prizes of tools or scholarships.

Students are also expected to participate in an internship before graduation.

Students are required to create a professional portfolio showcasing their knowledge and experiences.

Assessments: 

Students keep a daily log of their work and activities while working. This record is counted toward a weekly shop grade and documents the amount and type of work completed over two years.

National Occupational Competency Testing Institute (NOCTI) Exam in Automotive Technician Core.
